San Pasqual Battlefield By Jarmila Kopicka Have you ever seen a cannon fire? Have you ever watched a Battle Reenactment with horses, swords, cannons, and soldiers in the field fighting? I've always heard of Civil War Reenactments and of course the Gun Fight at Calico Ghost Town. But I've never heard or seen anything in Southern California for a "full on Battle Reenactment".... until we found San Pasqual Battlefield. The bloodiest Mexican American War Battle was fought here, just a few miles from Escondido, California. The first Sunday of the month is "living history days". We watched as the "soldiers", who were dressed in period clothing, packed, loaded and fired a cannon.... and we were only steps away!!! I was lucky to get a picture of the fuse as it was ignited... and then the cannon fired!!! There is also a museum and nature trail to explore too. The best part of this little day trip is the fact that it is FREE!! The museum, the 'living history days', the parking... all of it was free. This is a great family day trip for the kids and one of many free travel ideas that should make it on your "To Do List!".
